I couldn't agree more! 👍 Thank you for being brave enough to raise this issue! I'm so tired of hearing keyboard warriors who are hiding away in their mothers cellar, and taking cheap shots at the brave individuals who actually put themselves out in the world, and actually make things! And produce content! Content that we can choose to watch, whether something is made with handtools, power tools, or a mixture of both, if someone doesn't like what is being put out by one creator, they can watch something else! Just writing negative rubbish without doing anything productive just gets you into a spiral of darkness! Choose to watch something that makes you happy, and if it doesn't suit you shut up and bugger off! Find something else to watch! Because at the end of the day I chose to watch channels like this because I want to see what they produce! What I don't want to see or hear is some negative muppet droning on and creating a black hole! Best wishes to you and the other positive creators out there! Many thanks and kind regards 😀 Rob 🇳🇿

Please don’t change anything you do. I have watched, literally every single one of your videos and you have inspired me to be more creative and just go for it! I even brought Narex chisels as I loved watching you work with them. (I got a bit obsessive and actually got a about 4 different sets 😳😳 I have made things over the years, and my wife has loved them. Unfortunately I lost her in February this year to the C, but she would want me to keep making things. I can hear her now, “you are so clever, I don’t know how you can do that”. You helped me and gave me that inspiration to do a lot of these things. All this negative bullshit you guys have to suffer,is absolute horsehit. It’s not worth a bean of your time. You are a phenomenal woodworker that has shown me ways of just being creative and your humour is right up my street!! I’m not in a position at the moment to go down the Patreon route but as soon as I am (and I will get there) .I will be all over it. Please don’t ever stop what you’re doing. I know how you have inspired me and there are loads of people just like me that love your content. As you said in the video, you do you. Well please just keep doing you do you. Your work is amazing and your banter is what we need in this hobby / industry. Just fuck the haters👍🏻👍🏻

I had the fortunate starting point of being in a FIFO job, which meanr I had a bit of extra coin and a lot of spare rime (only technically working 6 months of the year), but in saying that, I still have a Jobsite table saw. My thicknesser was purchased 2nd hand, my drop saw is an Ebay special and I started with a ryobi cheap router from the local Bunno's. My thought process was get in somewhat cheap, make sure I enjoy doing this in my spare time and then let the products sold (still yet to sell anything) pay for new, bigger and better tools. Seeing the "$50,000 in tools sure helps doesnt it" comments is one of the most frustrating things.

Another ‘please stop hitting me’ rant from a RUclipsr. Look, RUclips, TikTok, instagram and the internet generally is a steaming pit of assholes, cranks, twats and absolute bullshit. What, you didn’t know?? If it gives you so much grief, (which it clearly does, given the length of the video), there’s a simple solution: STOP DOING IT. No one’s holding a gun to your head. (And as an aside, since the revenue is so poor, you could market your monotone delivery as a cure for insomnia). Just make stuff with your expensive tools, ignore the jealousy, post pretty pictures of your masterpieces on instagram and shut up about it. At the end of the day, nobody gives a crap.

  • @pgtips4240

This is very insightful. You are absolutely correct that there is so much that goes into creating a youtube video professionally and consistently. I started a small channel 6 years ago (only has 4 videos) but I can totally relate to how much work and multi-skills are involved. I myself have been a videographer for years and that made things much simpler for me but the technical aspects are just one of many hurdles. You have to be producing engaging content on a regular basis and then when you put in so much effort in come the nay sayers and knock you down. It's never going to be easy when engaging with the general public, there will always be that few who through jealousy will not be able to say a good or positive word. Thanks for the video and for all your hard work. 😊

So many solid points of view in this vid and as someone who makes videos for a living and has a workshop the thought of taking my production gear into the shop blows my head, I find it hard enough to get the phone out of my pocket and take a snap while I'm working. I've always felt that carpentry and film making are very similar in terms of problem solving, eye for detail and a steady hand. and yes you can make great film with a shitty camera and beautiful things with minimal tools it's all about knowing the limits of what you have and working to their strengths. - I'm off to check out the lady in dungaree vids, who knew that was a thing!

This ends up being a complex topic because it involves human psychology and the potentially predatory, or at least misaligned with human values, algorithms. And some of the comments you listed are reasonable. If you title a video something silly in order to drive views you deserve to be poked fun at for that. If you use $5000 worth of tools to make a $20 box and advertise it as a cheap project that’s irony. And the internet will not let you get away with that without having a rib at you. Is that what they say in England? The other thing is that your audience matters. And they aren’t just one group. You can’t please everyone. And the ones you don’t cater too will not like you. You just have to decide who your target audience is. Because if you title videos to appeal to a crowd of people that isn’t your target audience they aren’t gonna be happy with you showing up in thier recommendations. Mike from modern builds said he specifically used Ryobi tools because that was the crowd he was targeting. He wanted to stay relatable. Jason from bourbon moth said he realized people weren’t even making his projects and he leaned into being a mostly entertainment woodworking channel. Now he builds what he wants and dives headfirst over his workbench and smears wood glue in his beard. People don’t care if he uses a domino because he targets people who watch strictly for entertainment. You absolutely need to cater to your audience and target the audience you want. Don’t just whine about people not liking you. Either cater to them or disregard them as not you target audience. And stop making video titles to appeal to the masses if you don’t want to make videos for the masses. The last thing is, people have huge egocentric bias. They see the world and define the world through thier own brain. This is especially true for people born in the 21st century in the western world. They don’t remember a time when the digital environment wasn’t catering to them in a bespoke fashion like they are a princess. Everyone wants everything they see to be just for them, exactly as they want it. And with anonymity they will rudely express thier dissatisfaction when you don’t please them online. The younger they are and the more privileged they are the more likely they are going to be bratty like this. I personally never cared if people had professional shops. But I was already an adult when RUclips came out. And had been doing artistic and woodworking stuff for years with minimal tools because I had no money. Then I got money and got better tools. Then it started to feel like I was setting up a furniture factory in my garage. And that didn’t feel right. So I leaned more into hand tools trying to recaptue the amateur feel of DIY that my projects used to have. You just have to be aware that if you market a video as cheap or “DIY” it’s gonna attract a bunch of people who have no money or tools and when they fuss about it you need to look at the cause and not just get mad at them. If this is how you have to market to get views so be it. Just don’t read the comments then. I don’t know. I’m not a content creator so you gotta do what you gotta do. Just try not be as upset as the people you are calling out seem to be.

I started with a black and decker drill a handsaw a coping saw. I made some outstanding projects. Here's the thing all you guys. I don't begrudge your success. I don't begrudge your journeys and the tools that you have. I've loved watching Rag and Bone Brown level up, making do with what he can find, I love watching what Dainsy creates when he gets the materials he can get and the giant game of jenga he plays, when something new comes along and he tries to fit it into his space. I don't begrudge the awesome festool stuff you have Hew. I don't begrudge Mark, upgrading his workshop from his unpowered shed on startmaking to his new shiny finally powered workshop. It's nice to see and celebrate the success and gain the inspiration. I really dig your comment on Matt Estlea - you want to learn - he's an actual teacher. Reason this community is what it is, is that we (myself), as someone just getting into this stuff a) enjoy your content. b) we do learn from what you teach us, c) it is useful to see what all the different tools can do and can be used in your workflow. Learning isn't about wrote - it's listening and then trying and working out what works for you. Fuck it - if I had the money and space, I'd have all manner of shit. Doesn't necessarily mean I would actually make anything more than I currently do. My advice - keep cracking on with the great content. Keep making the great pieces and don't listen to all the negative stuff. If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't have rekindled something I enjoyed doing in school and I certainly wouldn't have randomly bought the crapiest scroll saw the world has ever seen and then spent hours with my 6 year old making random jigsaw puzzles and birdboxes. Yeah - I still have a pile of half made components for a chair I'm trying to work out and I still only have half of the jewelry box I've been making for my wife for a year, but if it wasn't for all of you, I wouldn't even have that and I certainly wouldn't have spent the time making sawdust with my kids.

I'd take a guess that a fair majority of people who complain about how good/expensive/vast peoples tools are the kind of people that will then jump in their brand new BMW/Audi/Mercedes car, drive to a restaurant or pub for a meal and few drinks to cheer themselves up (dropping £100 every weekend) before booking their 4th holiday of the year. And then complain that they can't afford these nice tools! I probably sit somewhere in the middle regarding tools. I can't drop the money required for Festool, etc because I choose to spend it elsewhere, the area that I earn my money through and I get the biggest return on investment. I'll try and buy fewer decent tools over lots of cheap but I certainly won't complain because you've got a Festool mitre saw and I don't (well, maybe a little bit cos I'd really like one 🙂). As the saying in our house goes, "fuck 'em all"

Thanks for this video. Really enlightening. I tried making a video and realised about 10 mins into the filming process that it wasn't for me - and that was just the faff of moving the camera about for some different angles. Content creation is an art and a skill and I appreciate the work you guys put in.

I won’t lie, I’d really like to just leave the camera at home and just make something with out all that… but then I’d really regret not filming it 🤦🏻‍♂️

Fking hell mate, I am glad you lot made that video for our entertainment and understanding. I am a professional carpenter and frustrated woodworker, i guess you could call me diyer. I have a descent kit but would kill to have a workshop and all the cabinet maker stuff, but I dont, i therefore just make it work somehow. You guys inspire me to be a bit more creative and it even reflect on my day to day job wether it's first or second fix, boxing in ect ect. I salut you. x

I can’t imagine working outside of a workshop doing site work, when I’ve done it I’ve proper dragged my knuckles! But then that’s really only where the money is it seems 😔

Great video Ben. I’ve sat and agreed with all you said. I can’t understand the negativity some people have. It probably goes deeper than just RUclips comments and runs through there whole life. That must be a really sad existence. One thing I have enjoyed though in the maker / woodworking community is that 99% of people are so positive and offer encouragement. Keep up the good work and don’t spend that £38 RUclips money on one go!!

I’m starting to wonder if there’s something in the water or food, the height of anger is on a whole new level, even my brother can go from 0-100 in a split second, women have become little bundles of anger 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe I should lay off twitter 😂

@@HewAndAwe the right to be outraged and angry at others getting worse and I do t know what is fueling it. Maybe it’s the anonymity that a keyboard and the internet bring. I bet half of them wouldn’t have the stones to say it to your face.

Great video. I dont see any of you guys boasting about your tools. Ive eatched most of you start with ehatever you can get your hands on. Im the same, ive built up my tool collection 2 or 3 times and had to sell for financial reasons. So im starting again. I love trading up it gives a sense of accomplishment aswell as improving productivity. My favourite is when people say "its not eood working, back in the day carpenters did everything by hand". Thats amazing but are you telling me those carprenters and furniture makers wouldnt jump at the chance of a tablr saw saw or a thicknesser??. 👍👍👍

Been a fan of your content for a couple of years now. Do I like everything about everything your build or how you go about it. I would hope not. But, you are honest, funny and extremely talented. Your insight into the RUclips haters is spot on. I enjoy a whole bunch of different makers on here. It is the variety, creativity and entertainment value that I seek. Some of them have fancy workshops with all the bells and whistles. Some are in a small garage. Some have Festool all over the place. Some have a bunch of different cheaper tools. Some never pull out a hand tool. Some barely use power tools. I am a builder/carpenter turned hobby wood worker. I get inspired by the variety and creativity. If you get jealous or envious of the tools or workshop of the presenter, you have tuned in for all the wrong reasons. Press on my friend and ignore the chatter. You have true fans.

It's because of the tools I use that I don't make videos. The only reason I can see that people get upset at the sight of expensive tools is just jealousy for nor good reason. A drill from one brand does the same core task as the other brands at the end of the day. The point to take away is what they are doing with tools, not the brand on the tool. How the acquired their kit doesn't matter either.

I really wouldn’t let that stop you, you can see from the comments below there’s only 1% of sausages on RUclips.
